Using public LiDAR data from the Visual Shizuoka project, I processed raw point cloud data into a styled elevation surface in QGIS. The coordinate system alone tried to crush me, shoutout to JGD2011/Japan Plane Rectangular CS IX for being a formidable opponent, but after some creative trigonometry and a lot of patience, the terrain landed where it belongs. From there I built an interactive Leaflet web map in PyCharm - no templates, just HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Each pin on the map marks a place I actually spent time at during my stay in Shimoda: beaches, izakayas, and a flower garden on a cape. Click any pin and find photos or videos. A personal map of a very special place - built entirely from open data and stubbornness.
